The attempt, which took place at Sydney's City Recital Hall last month, was organised by Australian healthcare and medical recruiter Charterhouse Medical.

The gathering broke the previous the previous record of 398 set at an event organised by Escapade Fancy Dress (UK) at Student Central in London, UK, back in October 2014.

The comic book themed event was held in aid of Life Education, an organisation that provides drug and health education for children and young adults with Charterhouse supplying the costumes to make sure participants complied with world record rules.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Brooke Murray, a recruiting consultant for Charterhouse, said that that the attempt was the first time she was “recruiting Spider-Men.” She said that putting on the mask could be restricting. “You get into it as soon as you put it on, even people who might have been a little bit unsure, as soon as they get their costumes on you can see them transform”.

Charterhouse Medical’s idea for a the attempt came from a similar event held by UK recruiter Goodman Masson which saw them organise a successful bid for the largest gathering of people dressed as Peter Pan last year in London.
