Continuing our series where we ask our judges to share their most memorable moments, this week, Guinness World Records adjudicator Phillip Robertson recalls the moment that the Seattle Seahawks produced an earthquake during an attempt to reclaim the title for the loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium.

Since September 2013, fans of the Seattle Seahawks have been in a hotly competitive battle with the Kansas City Chiefs for the Guinness World Records title: Loudest roar at a sports stadium.

Currently, the Kansas City Chiefs hold the record after an almost deafening roar of 142.2 decibels (dbA) was achieved at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, on 29 September 2014.

The Seattle Seahawks had previously held the record after their fans produced a thunderous roar of 137.6 dbA at Centurylink Stadium in Seattle, Washington, USA on 2 December 2013.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Phillip Robertson heard it for himself…

“One of the most memorable series of records from recent years has been the countless attempts at the loudest crowd roar record titles, at sport stadiums both indoor and out.

After the Seattle Seahawks achieved the record title in September 2013, the Kansas City Chiefs took the title the next month. How did the Seahawks respond? They took it right back less than 2 months later. The Kansas City Chiefs are the current record holders, but watch this space…

I was thrilled to be on the side-lines in December 2013, watching top American football players in action during a crucial game on the road to being crowed Superbowl champions.

Loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium - fans

This excitement was only surpassed when I felt the ground shaking underneath me as thousands of fans roared in unison during an attempt to reclaim the loudest roar title for the Seattle Seahawks.

The noise generated by the crowd, aka “Volume 12 – The Seahawks 12th Man”, was so loud that it registered as a minor earthquake, according to seismologists. Vibrations measuring between a magnitude one and two earthquake were detected in the region.

Not only did they blast the record, the Seahawks went on to win the game 34-7.
