A total of 34 world records were set during this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon from 49 listed attempts.
The fastest time of all records was Fastest marathon Dressed as a Superhero who came in at an elite time of 2.30.12, breaking the previous record of 2:33, achieved by Paul Martelletti dressed as Spider-Man.
Other spectacular and fun records of the day included Fastest marathon three-legged (female) at a time of 4.45.21 achieved by good friends Debbie Leeland and Paula Marshall and Fastest marathon dressed as a leprechaun at a time of 2.59.30 achieved by lucky Adam Jones.
As if running wasn’t enough, some decided to add more elements to their record like American Jerry Knox who achieved the record Fastest marathon dribbling two basketballs achieving an impressive 4.10.44. Commenting on the his inspiration for the record, Jerry said: ‘My son read in the Guinness World Records book that someone had a world record for dribbling two basketballs and he was like, hey dad you could beat him, and I did!’. Marc Jenner achieved the near impossible breaking the record for Fastest marathon carrying an 80-lb pack, the equivalent weight of a dishwasher, with a time of 5.53.20 breaking down in tears as he received his certificate at the end of the race.
Guinness World Records Official Adjudicator Alex Angert, who oversaw the official attempts said ‘It’s been a spectacular day of record-breaking achievement for everyone involved, we have seen an elite time and many records sub 3 and 4 hours with runners outdoing themselves to break these records. We welcome everyone who has broken a record at the Virgin Money London Marathon to the Guinness World Records family!’
