Guinness World Records has learnt with great sadness of the passing of American Gertrude Weaver at the age of 116 years and 276 days.

Born on 4 July 1898, Ms Weaver, who lived in Arkansas, became the official record holder for the oldest woman and oldest person just last week at the age of 116 years and 271 days.

Ms Weaver had succeeded Misao Okawa of Japan who sadly passed away last Wednesday, just one month after her 117th birthday.

Guinness World Records is currently investigating and verifying potential successors for the oldest woman living title and will announce the new title holder in due course.
