Shopaholic singles have helped online retailer Alibaba set a new world record for online sales.

The Chinese website now has the title for highest online sales revenue generated by a single company in 24 hours after racking incredible takings of 57,114,214,058 Chinese Yuan (Equivalent to $9,321,434,125 or £5,854,226,139) last Tuesday.

The record was set as part of Single's Day which has recently become synonymous with huge online sales in China.

Falling on November 11 - or "11.11" - the date with the most 1’s - Singles Day has become one of the world's largest online shopping days.

Alibaba has annually offered discount promotions on the day to encourage China's unattached to treat themselves to something nice.

More than 27,000 companies took part in Alibaba's Singles Day promotions, including western brands such as American Eagle Outfitters, ASOS, Blue Nile, Calvin Klein, Desigual, Juicy Couture and The North Face.

The same day also saw celebrations for, Tmall, one of Alibaba Group's online platforms, which set its own record for the most mobile phones sold on a single online platform in 24 hours, after selling an incredible 1,894,867 handsets.
