Tallest living man Sultan Kosen's wedding highlighted October.

For our friends in the UK, October was all about wondering if it was still too early to start preparing for Christmas. And for those of us in the U.S., it was all about finding that perfect Halloween costume. For Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, it was about finally teaming up to headline a movie and for the FA, it was time to celebrate 150 years helping govern the world’s most popular sport. But it was also a time for some truly monumental record breakers, with a month that saw achievements set and broken as varied as they were impressive.

Nothing owned October quite like Grand Theft Auto. The series’ fifth and latest installment came out, like, well, gangbusters in smashing a half dozen records nearly instantly upon its release.

One man who knows a thing or two about coming out of the gate strongly: Edson Arantes do Nascimento, aka Pelé. The one-time 17-year-old prodigy, turned arguably the greatest soccer player of all time, was bestowed with a pair of Guinness World Records titles this month. As if his resume needed more padding!

A couple of great records were set just in time for Halloween, as the Jersey Shore broke the bank on a makeup budget with a massive zombie walk, while a group of Canadian children helped stretch a line of jack-o’-lanterns nearly 1,000 feet.

While we would have to wait a month for the return of Katniss Everden in “Catching Fire,” America’s Ted Batchelor paid a fitting-if-unintentional homage to The Hunger Games sequel with his record for the most people performing full body burns.

The big movie highlight of the month in India came courtesy of the Bollywood release, “Boss.” To commemorate the film and its star, iconic actor Akshay Kumar, fan club “TeamAkshay” built the largest poster ever made.

And from one larger-than-life man to another, we at GWR were happy to hear of the wedded bliss enjoyed by Sultan Kosen, the tallest man living. In a ceremony in his native Turkey, Kosen married new wife Merve Dibo, uniting the 5-foot-9 bride with her 8-foot-3 groom.

Kosen was named the tallest man living in 2009.
