I started boxing when I was 10 years old. I won seven national titles. I won a European gold medal
0:08
and at the age of 23 I won an Olympic bronze medal for Great Britain. I got told that I could
0:15
never punch ever again. I damaged both of my hands. I had a hole in one knuckle, a big tear in the
0:22
other tendon. I had surgery on both hands but my hands didn't recover. I got told that I would
0:29
never be able to punch again. It was then when I went down a bit of a dark spiral in life
0:37
When I was little, I used to collect the Guinness World Record books. Couldn't wait to
0:42
look inside of them and see all of the extraordinary achievements done by all of
0:47
these extraordinary people. Fast forward 30 plus years right now, my children are doing the exact
0:54
same thing. I wanted to show my children that with hard work and dedication and the right mindset
1:02
we also can do extraordinary things I just thought that this is the perfect record for me to attempt When the event started I felt pretty good I got over 6 punches in the first hour
1:20
which was above my target. And then hour two, three, four, I had lots of people around me in the gym
1:26
that was supporting me and watching. Hour five and six, I was getting energy from I didn't know where
1:33
and I had my headphones on and I was singing along and going along. I was like, yeah, I'm breathing this
1:38
I was 8, 9, 10. I pushed myself a little bit harder
1:43
But then, after hour 12, it made me think, what have I done
1:52
I should have slowed these first 12 hours down because I went too hard
1:56
And when I come to hour 12, that's when reality kicked in
2:01
How am I going to get through this for another 12 hours? And then I went out for hour 13
2:06
and it was a really tough hour. I got into hour 14 and I felt good
2:11
And then hour 15, I felt good and I was like, I'm back on track now
2:15
And it was great. Hour 17, hour 18. And then something happened on hour 19 what really hit me hard And for some reason I thought I was starting hour 21 and I said to my wife only three hours left and she went three hours You got five hours left
2:36
And I turned and I looked at the clock on the wall, and I seen I had five hours left
2:43
And then by the time I got to hour 21, this was when the fatigue in my shoulders really started
2:49
kicking and I was hurting, hurting a lot. Every single punch I was throwing, never it was burning
2:56
My daughter, before I started this record, she created a little badge for me about this big
3:03
and we stuck it on the bag and I remember at this point when my shoulders were burning
3:09
I could see this while I was punching and it really made me think why I'm doing this
3:17
and I thought about my three young daughters and that really did help me push through that burning sensation
3:26
and get through hour 22, 23, until we got at hour 24
3:32
And it was here where I achieved something pretty extraordinary Before I started this record
3:46
my goal was to get 84,600 punches. That's the equivalent of one punch a second for 24 hours
3:54
The final number that I ended up getting was 147,218 punches. 1.7 punches a second for 24 hours
4:08
We as human beings can do what we put our mind to
4:13
And this is what I'm telling my kids now. I remember my mum told me, if you want to do things that no one else has done
4:20
you've got to do things that no one else does. I stand in the gym, punching the heavy bag for 24 hours
4:27
Yeah, people is not doing that. And now that I've done it, I know that my great great grandkids, grandkids
4:34
will probably hear about the time that their great great great great great great grandad
4:39
achieved something pretty spectacular in getting a Guinness World Record
