The Brief

The renowned San Diego Zoo Global, one of the city’s most popular attractions, was celebrating its 100th anniversary.

For their Centennial Celebration, the San Diego Zoo was in search of an exciting event to showcase its thanks and appreciation to the San Diego community and park members for their continued support.

The Solution

With the focus of the event being the animals that have made the zoo an institution in San Diego, the zoo’s marketing team turned to the Guinness World RecordsTM creative consultancy team to identify a record to suit the theme of its event.

In honor of Prince the lion of the original Panama-California Exposition that inspired Dr. Harry Wegeworth to start the San Diego Zoo, Guinness World Records inaugurated the title for the Largest gather of people wearing hand puppets (lion puppets).

Over 500 attendees participated in the event and performed a lion puppet show led by San Diego Zoo spokesman Dr. Zoolittle for a duration of 2 minutes and 45 seconds. An official Guinness World Records™ adjudicator was present during the attempt to evaluate and confirm the record’s success.

The event drew significant media attention and the zoo highlighted their record holder status by promoting the Guinness World Records™ logo in all their press and social media announcements.
