The Brief
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) is an education organization that wanted a unique activation to engage attendees to their Annual Meeting & Exposition.
The event, set in September 2022 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, was their first in-person meeting in three years and the perfect opportunity to connect with members in an out-of-the-ordinary way.
The Solution
NCTM decided to go big and bold and showcase a great learning activity in an exciting way: by breaking the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the largest pattern blocks mosaic (pattern).
Over 350 people joined the activity and helped create the mosaic, partnering in smaller groups.
The final mosaic was verified by an official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, measuring at an impressive 30.24 m² (325 ft² 72 in²).
The record attempt became a highlight of the meeting, as attendees had the opportunity to see history in the making.
We attempted the Guinness World Records title for the largest pattern block mosaic at our Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, CA. It was the first Annual Meeting NCTM has had in three years. It was very well received, generated lots of excitement, and engaged participants in a group mathematics activity while attempting a world record. One of the best things about the attempt was that there were lots of conversations about how the teachers could take what was done back to their math classrooms with their students.
