Rio 2016 round-up: China's Long Qingquan smashes weightlifting record to take gold

The 2016 Rio Olympics is now well underway and athletes taking part in this year’s Games have already notched up a number of impressive sporting world records.
 
Here Guinness World Records shares a roundup of the record-breaking action that took place in Brazil during the opening weekend.
 

Heaviest weightlifting 56 kg total (male) – Long Qingquan (China)


Long Qingquan from China won a gold medal in men’s 56 kg weightlifting after he lifted a staggering total of 307 kg during his last attempt at the snatch, clean and jerk.

The 25-year-old – who previously won gold at the Beijing Games in 2008 – took first prize from reigning Olympic champion Om Yun-Chol of North Korea, who lifted 303 kg.
 
The Chinese weightlifter has broken a record that had previously stood for 16 years.
 

Fastest swim long course 100 metres breaststroke (male) – Adam Peaty (UK)


Twenty-one-year-old British swimmer Adam Peaty broke his own record twice during the Games, first during the heats with a time of 57.55 seconds (video below) and then again in the final with a blistering time of 57.13 seconds.
 
Adam’s win marks the first male Olympic gold medal in swimming for Team GB in 28 years.

Fastest swim long course 400 metres freestyle (female) – Katie Ledecky (USA)


American freestyle competitor Katie Ledecky smashed her own record in the 400 m race, finishing in just 3 minutes 56.46 seconds.
 
Britain's Jazz Carlin and fellow American Leah Smith were almost five seconds behind the 19-year-old Olympic medallist.
 
Ledecky will be defending her Olympic title in the 800 race later this week.

There were a couple more swimming records achieved at the weekend including Fastest swim long course 400 metres medley (female) by Katinka Hosszu from Hungary (4:26.36) and Fastest swim long course relay 4 x 100 metres freestyle (female) by an Australian team of Bronte Campbell, Cate Campbell, Emma McKeon and Brittany Elmslie (3:30.65).

Guinness World Records previously announced a new record for Brazilian soccer star Cristiane who earned a record for the Most goals scored in Olympics women’s football (soccer) after netting her 13th goal in her country’s game against China. She has since scored her 14th goal, earning the overall record for Most goals scored in Olympic football.

The US female basketball team broke two world records last night during their match against Senegal. Destroying their opponents 121-56, this is the Most points scored in an Olympic basketball match (female) ever. It is also the Highest margin of victory in an Olympic basketball match (female).

Over in archery, Kim Woo Jin of South Korea achieved the Most points scored in 70 metre 72 arrow FITA outdoor recurve (male) with an impressive 700.
