German companies Mainzplus Citymarketing GmbH and hammock manufacturer La Siesta GmbH took on a brand new Guinness World Records title in a bid promote the city of Mainz as a relaxing and cultural tourist destination: Most people lying in hammocks.

The tranquil challenge took place at the city’s “Mainzer Sommerlichter" summer festival and saw an impressive 269 people get involved – easily surpassing the 250 minimum that was required to get the record.

It took just 15 minutes to get everyone into their hammocks, where the guests were invited to lie back and sing the carnival song “Olé Fiesta“ – but changing the words to “Olé Siesta“ in honour of the lethargic record attempt.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Seyda Subasi Gemici declared the event a success and presented an official certificate to Jürgen Schmidt, mainzplus CITYMARKETING, and to Cornelius Grisar, director of the hammock-producer LA SIESTA GmbH.
