The Fellowship Fund for Employees of the Ministry of Health Muscat lit up the City Amphitheatre in Muscat, Oman with a sparkling attempt to set a new world record for the Most people blowing out candles simultaneously.

Officiated by Guinness World Records adjudicator Glen Pollard, 1,717 people successfully broke the previous record, more than doubling the former total of 841 that was achieved in China last year.

(Only 33 participants were disqualified for not blowing their candle out in the allotted five second time slot.)

The challenge took place during a stage show organised to celebrate Oman National Day and the 46th year of rule by His Majesty, Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said.

The patriotic participants sat in the amphitheatre wearing red, green or white outfits that created a representation of the Oman national flag.

Before the record attempt, the guests were treated to some musical and dance performances from a number of young Omani and Philippine school students.

Khaled Al-Balushi, the main organiser of the event, commented: “It was a pleasure trying for the official attempt. This means a lot for the Fellowship Fund for Employees of the Ministry of Health. It’s a big achievement for us breaking a record that has been there for nearly two years. Breaking the record means that people around the world will know about the Fellowship Fund in Oman and it will help them recognise our flags.”
