Yesterday’s thrilling soccer semi-final between Brazil and Honduras at the Rio Olympics saw the host nation’s star striker Neymar net a new world record for the Fastest goal in an Olympic football match (male).
Honduras kicked off the game but Neymar managed to steal the ball and score a goal within just 14 seconds.
Lopez tackled Neymar and brought him to the ground, but he was not quick enough to stop the ball rolling cleanly into the net.
In front of more than 70,000 cheering fans, Brazil went on to win the game 6-0, with Neymar bagging a second goal from the penalty spot in the 92nd-minute penalty after Honduras defender Johnny Palacios had fouled Luan.
The Olympics host nation will now face Germany in the battle for gold on Saturday.
The stakes are high as a win would mark the first time Brazil will have won Olympic gold in men’s football. It also offers the host nation a chance to revenge their humiliating 7-1 defeat at the hands of Germany in the 2014 World Cup.
Previously, the fastest goal in an Olympic football match was 28 seconds, achieved by Mexico’s Oribe Peralta when he found the back of the net after just 28 seconds against Brazil at Wembley Stadium, London, UK, on 11 August 2012 during the London Games.
