Year in World Records - September: Paralympic champions, Game of Thrones, Indian Prime Minister Modi's birthday title

With a year packed full of amazing world record achievements drawing to a close, Guinness World Records is taking a month-by-month look back over the most impressive, exciting and game-changing accomplishments that have happened in 2016.

 

This September saw a number of interesting records, including new titles for the cast of Game of Thrones, to the Prime Minister of India among others. 

 

We began the month with the launch of Guinness World Records 2017 edition. In celebration of the fantastic annual hitting the stands, popular USA morning segment, the TODAY Show, featured a live record attempt each morning with some of our most prolific record holders. 

 

Adjudicator Rob Molloy was present on set, with millions of viewers tuning in to watch. 

 

 

From back flipping extraordinaires and straitjacket escapes, te segments were among some of the most spectacular record attempts we adjudicated during September.

 

 

The sttart of the month also saw us reveal an ensemble of record-breaking stars that featured in the 2017 edition. 

 

Harnaam Kaur, who holds the record for Youngest female with a full beard, showcased her fascinating record to the world, sharing her inspiring story of how she overcame years of bullying to take ownership of her appearance. 

 

 

She even came to our UK head quarters to visit us, and took part in a live interview with our Facebook audience. 

 

 

  

Another new title holder in the 2017 book was our feline friend Didga, the kitty who holds the record for Most tricks performed by a cat in one minute. 

Didga managed to master an amazing 20 tricks with her owner Robert Dollwet in Australia. The incredible kitty's attempt included skateboarding, giving high fives, and roll overs. 

 

 

As cats can be quite stubborn creatures, her cunning obedience made her one of the most talented animals of the year.

Back in Rio, the 2016 Paralympics were in full swing, with a multitude of new world records being set. 

 

Petrucio Ferreira Dos Santos from Brazil won gold for Fastest 100 m - T45/46/47 male.

 

He accomplished this feat in a record time of 10.57 seconds, breaking the previous title by a considerable amount. 

 

Upon his winning moment, Petrucio said “I worked so hard to win this medal, our Brazilian medal. I'd like to dedicate it to the whole country, my state Paraiba and mainly to my parents.”

 

 

September also marked the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards, which took place in Los Angeles (USA). 

 

At the awards HBO’s global hit show Game of Thrones took home its 38th award after winning coveted statuettes for Best Writing, Best Directing and Best Drama. 

 

 

Because of their success, they achieved Most Emmy Awards for a fictional series and Most Emmy Awards for a drama series after receiving 12 Emmys.

 

 

Drawing the month to a close, the people of India broke three record titles in honour of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s 66th birthday. 

 

The attempts took place during an event organised by the Department of Empowerment of Disabled, Government of India and ALIMCO as part of the government’s ongoing ‘Accessible India’ initiative.

 

There, the world saw terrific records broken, including Most oil lamps lit simultaneously (single venue) at 989 and Most people fitted with hearing aids in 8 hours at 600 individuals. 

 

But perhaps the most striking title was Largest wheelchair logo/image, where 1,000 participants in wheelchairs depicted a message saying ‘Happy Birthday PM’ by wearing orange, white or blue hats and blankets.
