The oldest participant in the University Boat Race was James Cracknell (UK, b. 5 May 1972), who rowed for Cambridge in the 165th University Boat Race on 7 April 2019 aged 46 years 337 days. He finished in the winning boat as Cambridge beat Oxford in a time of 16 minutes 57 seconds.


An Olympic gold medallist in 2000 and 2004, Cracknell participated in the 2019 Boat Race aged eight years older than the previous oldest participant (Cambridge cox Andrew Probert in 1992) and ten years older than the next-oldest rower (Oxford’s Mike Wherley in 2008). He was studying for an MPhil in Human Evolutionary Studies at Peterhouse.
