Providing a massive 36 Mega-Watt-Hours (MWh) of energy storage via a "smart" power transmission system, the world's largest battery was commissioned in Zhangbei, Hebei Province, China. Jointly built by China's State Grid Corporation and BYD, the electrical vehicle manufacturer, the battery regulates and stores energy produced from local 100MW wind turbines and 40MW solar photovoltaic panels that can power 12,000 homes for up to an hour in the event of total grid failure. Costing an estimated $500 million, this giant battery is housed in a dedicated building larger than a soccer field and has a computerized brain to manage the supply of energy as needed.
