Sangakkara took the ODI record from Australia's Adam Gilchrist (472 dismissals; 417 catches, 55 stumpings in 287 matches/281 innings in 1996-2008) with two catches in the final match of Sri Lanka's 2015 ODI series against New Zealand, at Wellington's Westpac Stadium on 29 January 2015. He had previously tied Gilchrist's 472 dismissals by catching New Zealand opener Martin Guptill at Dunedin's University Oval on 25 January 2015.
Sangakkara has also recorded 19 catches as a non-wicket-keeping fielder in ODIs, taking his total number of ODI dismissals to 501. This is 29 dismissals ahead of Adam Gilchrist, who did not add to his 472 dismissals as a wicket-keeper during his ODI career. With the addition of his 19 catches, Sangakkara eclipsed Gilchrist's all-time fielding record in an ODI against England at Hambantota, Sri Lanka, on 3 December 2014.
Sangakkara's record total of 99 ODI stumpings was 14 stumpings ahead of India's MS Dhoni as of 24 March 2015. His 383 ODI catches puts him third behind Gilchrist (417 catches) and South Africa's Mark Boucher (402).
In all international cricket (Tests, ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals combined), Sangakkara made a record 139 stumpings as of 18 March 2015 (five more than Dhoni), 539 catches (fourth behind Boucher on 952) and 678 dismissals (third behind Boucher on 998).
