The longest washing line of socks is 10,080 m (33,071 ft) and was achieved by Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West (Australia) in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia, on 5 June 2021.
The club decided to attempt the record to raise funds for four local charities involved with mental health, accommodation for young homeless people, helping former defense force personnel adjust to normal life and providing seed funding to young adults wishing to take tertiary studies.
They agreed that 10,000 metres of washing line was achievable – 50 metres for each of Port Macquarie’s 200 years, 100 metres for each year of Rotary in Australia and 200 metres for each year of our Rotary Club’s existence. In total, they ended up with 107,886 socks on the line!
