The largest ship ever sunk intentionally by its owners was the aircraft carrier USS America (CV 66), which was 319.2 m (1,047 ft 6 in) long and had a displacement of 75,800 tonnes. The ship was sunk in a live fire exercise off the Virginia, USA, coastline on 14 May 2005. Displacement is a conversion to metric from the official US Navy displacement of 83,573 tons, which is presumed to refer to 'short' tons.
