The largest crochet blanket measures 464.64 m² (5001.32 ft²) and was completed by Bernd Kestler (Germany) in Ishinomaki, Miyagi, Japan, on 20 September 2014.

The 11,000 crochet squares were handmade by individuals across the world and were sent to Mr. Kestler, and on 20 September 2014 those squares were made into a large blanket by Mr. Kestler, event staff and volunteers. Mr. Kestler decided to make this blanket in order to provide warmth and comfort to the people who were affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. After the attempt, the blanket was divided into smaller blankets and were distributed to the people living in temporary houses built in Ishinomaki after the earthquake.
