The attempt was made possible by the fact that John is so skilled at Asteroids he was able to build up a reserve of 99 extra lives that allowed him to leave the game running while he took comfort breaks: even though his ship was repeatedly destroyed this still did not result in a Game Over screen because of the this excess.
