The highest data transmission rate over hollow-core optical fibre is 73.7 Tb/s, which was achieved by engineers from Coriant R&D GmbH in their tests as part of the MODE-GAP programme, and published in the Journal of Lightwave Technology on 15 February 2014.
Hollow-core optical fibre is a proposed solution to the 'capacity crunch', when it's expected that the current data carrying capacity of solid-core optical fibres will be insufficient to meet the world's insatiable appetite for data capacity.
