The Hibernia oil platform is located in the north Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland. It consists of a 37,000 tonne production facility atop a 600,000 tonne base, which has storage for 1.3 million barrels of crude oil. The base also contains some 450,000 tonnes of solid ballast, which keeps the platform secured to the seabed. Oil production began in 1997 and the surface facility, which is crewed by 280 workers, is designed to withstand impacts from Arctic icebergs.
