Mayan carvings dating back to c. 600 BC depict the practice of tobacco smoking, though the cultivation of the tobacco plant, probably goes back much further, perhaps to 50006000 BC. The plant would originally have been burnt during ceremonies, but over the millennia its uses evolved. It was chewed, used as a pain killer, traded and c. 1000 BC, its leaves were first smoked to seal deals, settle a peace or simply for pleasure.
