The Secret of Monkey Island was the first point ’n’ click game to use a technique called character scaling. This allows a sprite –an image or animation that usually represents a character, for example the pirate Guybrush Threepwood –to appear nearer or further away from the player. The programmers scaled the sprite, which means they made it bigger or smaller, and this gave a feeling of perspective.
