The first MMORPG for mobile/cell phones was 'Shade', a multiplayer wireless RPG that made use of J2ME, BREW, and WAP technology. The game, which was set in a traditional fantasy world of elves, orcs and dragons, was coded by David Dies for Cosmic Infinity Inc. (both Canada) and was released in June 2002. By the end of that year it had amassed over 30,000 unique users who had collectively experienced over 18,000,000 minutes of gameplay.
