The sea port with the most cargo per year is the Port of Shanghai, which, in 2012, turned over a total of 736 million tonnes of cargo. Shanghai overtook the previous record holder, Singapore, in 2010. In 2012, Shanghai handled more than 32 million cargo containers (each measuring 6.1 metres long by 2.44 metres wide by 2.59 metres high). The port covers a total ground area of 3.94 square kilometres – the equivalent of 470 football pitches.
