Sam Hornish Jr. (USA), driving for Marlboro Team Penske, won the Indianapolis 500 with the first last-lap pass in the 90-year history of the race, on 28 May 2006. Hornish took the lead on the final lap, passing rookie Marco Andretti (USA) just before the checkered flag to capture his first Indy 500 win.
