The longest painting by an individual is 5,310 m (17,421 ft 3.12 in) and was achieved by Luca Fruzzetti (Italy), in Massa, Italy, on 5 September 2020.

Luca titled his artwork The Walk of Peace and aims to share a message of hope and optimism in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The artwork explores a variety of different themes such as peace, empathy, environmental sustainability, inclusion and diversity.

He conveys these themes through the use of two layers: the rainbow background and the life cycle of a butterfly. "It represents the different stages of existence [as well as] lightness and freedom", Luca explains.

In terms of the style, Luca opted for a 'child-like' representation in order to "foster this sense of desire and imagination and hope".

The painting took a total of five months of hard work and planning, and 20 of those days were spent almost continuously painting. The project was, however, not without it's difficulties. The cargo containing the canvas Luca needed was lost not once, but twice! This caused a one week delay but he finally managed to receive the canvas and get started with the project.

Also, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, finding volunteers and staff to help with the project was extremely difficult.

The project cost 52,500 EUR all together, with the canvas taking up the majority of the overall price tag at an eye watering 50,000 EUR!

The other costs were for the paints and other materials, such as brushes and rollers.

Luckily, Luca had a few sponsors from different companies and institutions for the attempt, so he was able to afford the cost.

Luca hopes with his Guinness World Records title that he can kick-start the art industry in Italy post-pandemic, and continue to inspire hope and optimism for anyone who comes across his record-breaking artwork.
