Charles Frederick Worth, who died in 1895, was the first designer to sign his work with a label and to show garments on live models. Born in Lincolnshire, UK, Worth moved to Paris, France, in 1845, where his talent for design was soon discovered by the ladies of the court of Napoleon III. He then started his own business and by 1871 had 1,200 people in his employment, making £14,981 (then US$80,000) a year.
