According to the World Meteorological Organization, a record 1,825 mm (71.8 in) of rain fell in 24 hours at Foc-Foc (elevation: 2,990 m; 9,810 ft) on the French island territory of Réunion in the Indian Ocean on 7–8 January 1966. The event occurred during the passage of tropical cyclone Denise.

Previously the record stood at 1,870 mm (73 in), which was said to have fallen in 24 hours on Réunion on 15–16 March 1952, in Cilaos (altitude: 1,200 m; 3,940 ft). However meteorologists now consider that figure "an old mistake".

Réunion also holds the rainfall records for 72 hours (three days) and 96 hours (four days) according to the WMO.
