The age for criminal responsibility in Iran is 9 for girls and 15 for boys - much lower than most other countries and one of the reasons for the fact that it has the highest number of juvenile executions. A juvenile is categorised as a person under the age of 18 at the time of the crime. In 2009, it was reported by the Amnesty International that there were seven such executions in Iran, while it had reported eight in 2008 with a further 133 facing execution. All of the prisoners were reported to be17 years old at the time of their alleged crimes, which included murder and rape. They were, however, only executed when older having been kept in prison for a number of years.
