The Special Purpose Dextrous Manipulator, or Dextre, was designed to perform some external maintenance operations on the ISS, reducing the need for hazardous human spacewalks. Its headless 3.5 m long body has two 3 m long arms and it can be attached to the end of the larger Canadarm2. It has its own colour TV cameras to aid operation by astronauts and it also has its own tool holster. It was launched on 11 March 2008 and delivered to the ISS by the space shuttle Endeavour.
