On 12 February 2001 NASA’s NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft touched down on the asteroid Eros, after 12 months of orbital observations. The landing was considered a mission bonus as the spacecraft had no landing gear but still survived after an impact velocity of 1.5-1.8 metres per second.
