After 45 group-stage and knockout matches, England lifted the trophy for a second time by beating Pakistan in the Melbourne final. India’s Virat Kohli was the heaviest run-scorer in the tournament (296), and he took over as the leading batter in the competition’s history, with 1,141 runs in 27 matches (25 innings) since 2012.

Among players who were selected for the 2022 edition, Kohli padded his lead over Rohit Sharma (963 runs, from a record-equalling eight tournament appearances and an unrivalled 39 matches in 2007-22), David Warner (806), Jos Buttler (799) and Shakib Al Hasan (742, from eight tournament appearances in 2007–22).
