Monitor class warships are named for the first of their class, USS Monitor, commissioned in 1862. They are slow, heavy and characterised by a low profile and single main turret. The Brazilian Navy’s riverine monitor Parnaíba (U-17) was commissioned in 1937 and is still in active service.
