In April 2007, a team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) carried out the first reported hack of a quantum network. Quantum networks were considered to be uncrackable until the team managed to set up what they describe as a quantum-mechanical ‘wire-tap’ and extract data that previously had been considered beyond the reach of even the most determined code breaker.
