Two movies share the record for the most Academy Award nominations for a Foreign Language Film, with 10: Wo Hu Cang Long, aka Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Chinese Taipei/USA, 2000), and Roma (Mexico/USA, 2018).


It was announced on 23 January 2018 that Roma, written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón (Mexico), was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Achievement in Directing, Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Yalitza Aparicio), Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (Marina de Tavira), Best Original Screenplay (Cuarón), Best Achievement in Production Design (Eugenio Caballero, Barbara Enriquez), Best Achievement in Sound Editing (Sergio Diaz, Skip Lievsay), Best Achievement in Sound Mixing (Skip Lievsay, Craig Henighan, José Antonio García). It won for Direction, Cinematography and Best Foreign Language Film.

On 13 February 2001, the martial arts movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, directed by Ang Lee and starring Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, Art Direction, Music (Score), Cinematography, Best Picture, Best Director, Music (Song), Writing (Adapted Screenplay), Film Editing and Costume Design. It won for Best Foreign Language Film, Art Direction, Music and Cinematography. First released on 30 June 2000, it became the highest-grossing foreign language film, taking $100 million (£70,159,683) by 20 March 2001 on both sides of the Atlantic.

The previous record was seven, achieved by La vita è bella, aka Life is Beautiful (Italy, 1997), in 1999.
