The smallest satellite launch vehicle was Pegasus - the three-stage booster was 15.5 m (50 ft 10 in) long. Pegasus has now been succeeded by an operational Pegasus XL version. The original Pegasus, first launched in 1990, was air-launched from an aircraft jet called Stargazer.
