A huge sporting event that was held in Gujarat, India has just been awarded with a Guinness World Records title for the Largest tug of war tournament ever, after an overwhelming 4,672 people took part.
 
The event was part of the city’s Annual Sports Festival 'Khel Mahakumbh', and was organised by District Administration Bharuch (India), as well as Chief Minister Smt Anandiben Patel, Manish Bharadwaj IAS from the Secretary of Government of Gujarat - Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department, and Dr Vikrant Pandey.

In their record application, a spokesperson told Guinness World Records: “Our attempt is to drive home a message to all that participation and competition in sports paves the way for a united, fitter and healthier nation.”

An unbelievable number of people queued up to take part in this huge mass participation title attempt, with the event smashing the previous record of 1,574 players (achieved by Phi Kappa Psi and Zeta Tau Alpha at RIT in New York, USA in 2012) by a staggering 3,098 people.
 
 
In order to achieve the title, each game had to follow the rules set out by the Tug of War International Federation.
 
JP Arts and Science College proved to be the strongest teams and became the overall winners of the record-breaking competition.
