Southern US grocery store Food Lion recently achieved a noteworthy Guinness World Records title while also helping their local Virginia community.

Aiming to set the record for Most bagged lunches assembled in one hour, the effort was part of Food Lion’s 60th anniversary celebration and the company’s commitment to eliminate hunger through their programme, Food Lion Feeds.

For the record to be a success participants needed to include a minimum of four items into each lunch bag including one drink, a sandwich, and two snacks.

The food store managed to make an impressive total of 10,320 lunch bags, setting a new record and garnering ample donations for two local food banks in the greater Virginia area.

"At Food Lion, we're honored to celebrate 60 years of feeding, caring and nourishing our communities," said Meg Ham, president of Food Lion. "While I'm proud of what our team accomplished by setting this new Guinness World Records title, I'm even more excited about the opportunity we have to connect with our neighbors to help fight hunger while drawing attention to an issue facing nearly nine million people in the towns and cities we serve."

A main goal of the company’s project is for Food Lion Feeds to provide 500 million meals to individuals and families in need by the end of 2020. With this particular record, volunteers definitely contributed to that substantial number.

"You provide a lot of food, you provide a lot of cash, but you also provide a lot of heart," added Michael McKee, CEO of Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. "Last year alone, Food Lion donated 2.2 million meals to our food bank."

Since the launch of Food Lion Feeds in 2014, the grocer has donated more than 320 million meals through associate volunteerism, in-store campaigns, in-store food rescue programs and equipment donations.
