Mi.com's CEO Lei Jun accepts an official Guinness World Records certificate from adjudicator Charles Wharton

There was plenty to celebrate for Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi yesterday as the company marked its 5th anniversary with a world record.

The tech firm’s direct-to-customer website Mi.com store managed to sell an incredible 2,112,010 handsets over the course of its birthday, setting a new record for most mobile phones sold on a single online platform in 24 hours.

The record came amid the company’s annual fan festival, which sees it offer various special promotions to its customers during its anniversary period.

According to the company, this year’s Mi Fan Festival saw it generate a total of 2.08 bn yuan ($335 mn) in revenue with 770,000 smart appliances and 38,600 TVs also being sold on top of its record-setting smartphone sales.

A total of 14.6 million consumers are said to have completed a purchase from the site during the promotional period.

The mobile phone record was confirmed by Guinness World Records earlier today following verification of an agreed upon procedures report from auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.
