The Mississippi State University Student Association (USA) kicked off the American football season by setting an all-new mass participation record for the Most people ringing cowbells simultaneously at the “Cowbell Yell” pep rally in the Davis Wade Stadium.

5,748 students, employees, alumni and members of the local community – each with a cowbell in hand – gathered in the attempt arena and joined together to play their instruments along with the university’s resident marching band.

JoJo Dodd, Student Association President said: “We decided to attempt this record because the cowbell is a very special tradition to Mississippi State University. We thought that this record should officially have its home in Starkville, MS.”

MSU is actually the only school in the National Collegiate Athletic Association where fans are allowed to bring artificial noisemakers (like cowbells) along to games.

Official Guinness World Records adjudicator Amanda Mochan was at the event to verify the attempt and present the university with a certificate following their success.
