Guinness World Records has just confirmed that the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer is officially the world’s Fastest computer.

Invented by the National Research Center for Parallel Computer Engineering Technology (China), the incredible machine was proven to perfom at 93.01 petaflops/s on the Linpack benchmark at the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, China, as published on 20 June 2016.

The Sunway Taihulight has a staggering 40,960 separate processors operating in tandem with one another, allowing it to perform at nearly three times the benchmark of the previous record holder.

Fastest computer

The unbelievably powerful supercomputer will be used for detailed calculations and research in the fields of climate, weather and earth systems modelling, life science research, advanced manufacturing, and data analytics.

Prior to this, the record was held by supercomputer "Tianhe-2", which was developed by China’s National University of Defense Technology. The computer performs at a comparatively-slow 33.86 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark.

Rowan Simons, President of Guinness World Records Greater China presented an official certificate to Dr. Yang Guangwen, Director of National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi (pictured at top of page).

Speaking at the event, Simons said: “I’m very happy to present certification to this exciting record. It is a significant breakthrough for China in the supercomputing field, and a good chance to show the world about the contribution of China to improving technology. All those scientific specialists who devoted unremitting effort to this project are all our record holders! Guinness World Records looks forward to presenting more high technology related records from China to the whole world.”
