Major League Baseball and the Cincinnati Reds wanted to put on an unforgettable event to launch the MLB All-Star Week in Cincinnati, which begins next week.

On Thursday 9th July, the professional baseball players and hundreds of their young fans aged 8-18, joined together to set a Guinness World Records title for the Largest game of catch (baseball/softball) in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

An incredible 1,058 people played the game, scoring all the participants a place in the history-books – they easily batted past the 500 catchers required to set the record.

The event was organised as part of MLB’s commitment to making baseball and softball more accessible for under-served young people – signing up was free, and participants received a courtesy t-shirt, baseball and snacks.

Prior to the event, a spokesperson for NLB and the Cincinnati Reds said, “The attempt to set this Guinness World Records title will not only launch All-Star Week, but will be a great opportunity for young people and families across Reds Country to take part in All-Star festivities

“The event will also place a spotlight on the Cincinnati MLB Urban Youth Academy, one of the many youth initiatives undertaken by Major League Baseball, and the positive impact that is made there on a daily basis."

MLB legend Dave Parker and the MLB COO were on hand to accept the certificate once an official Guinness World Records adjudicator confirmed the record had been set.

This is not the first time MLB has accomplished a world record as back in 2006 they made the Largest baseball. Signed by famous players including Hank Aaron and Derek Jeter, it measured 3.6 m (12 ft) in diameter and went on display at the John Hancock All-Star FanFest, and will be displayed at the T-Mobile All-Star FanFest (a huge interactive baseball theme park) next week.
