During this year’s hearing awareness week, Australian Hearing urged the nation to get their hearing checked in record-breaking style by attempting the Most hearing screening tests carried out in eight hours at a single venue, and they shattered it with 712 people.

The attempt was planned to launch the organisation’s Big Aussie Hearing Check campaign which aims to encourage Australians to look after their hearing health.

Patrick Williamson, Manager, Australian Hearing Mid North Coast, said: “We were aiming to screen 600 people, so smashing the record at 712 is amazing.  Everyone came together to do us proud, but most of all, we had great fun!”

The previous record was a comparably small 494 participants, achieved by Life Fourways Hospital (South Africa) back in 2009.

Gina Mavrias, Director of Operations and Clinical Services, said: “Being the Guinness World Records holder is symbolic for Australian Hearing as our organisation is unique across the world. “

The record attempt took place between 8am and 4pm at a hearing centre in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia, and was attended by a team of fully qualified audiologists and medical professionals.

Measures were in place to explain the results of the test to each person, and guidance for care was given in accordance with the test outcomes.

Official Guinness World Records adjudicator Benjamin Backhouse concluded the hugely successful event with a certificate presentation.
