Shunichi Kanno’s can-do attitude has enabled him to reclaim the record for the most drink cans placed on the head using air suction.

Without using any type of adhesive, the 31-year-old from Japan stuck 11 cans to his head, breaking the previous record of 10, set by Jamie “Canhead” Keeton (USA) in 2022.

Kanno figured out how to place cans on his temples in order to “take revenge” and win back his record, which he previously held in 2019 with a total of nine cans.

“I also wanted to make my face more beautiful and attractive,” he joked.

To successfully achieve this record, each can must be held in place using only the air pressure created by the air trapped between the base of the can and the challenger’s head. The cans must all remain attached to the head for at least five seconds.

Kanno doesn’t think that he has any type of skin condition that enables him to perform this feat, unlike previous record holder Jamie Keeton.

Jamie has a rare, unnamed condition which causes the pores of his skin to absorb more oxygen than the average person, allowing his body to act as somewhat of a magnet.

Kanno explained his technique as follows: “You make a wrinkle [on your skin], then place a can there. Push the can firmly towards your head and ease your wrinkle. This reduces the air pressure between the can and the skin, and the can should stick like a suction cup.”

Kanno said he initially became interested in breaking a record due to his “large forehead”.

“I have had a big forehead since I was young,” he revealed. “Everyone mentioned that, so I felt that I had something quite unique. I was thinking about how I can put this to good use.”

Soon after, he discovered that he could attach cans to his head, and the rest is history. With a surname like Kanno, it can only be fate for him to have developed this uncanny talent.

And Kanno doesn’t just place cans onto his head – he can also attach them to his body!

In 2020, he set the record for the most drinks cans placed on the body using air suction, achieving a total of 20.

Through trial and error, he discovered several places on his body where cans stick “pretty well”, although he finds it more difficult than placing cans on his head.

Kanno enjoys showing off his remarkable ability at the many bars in Tokyo’s Shinjuku Golden Gai district, which is his favourite place to go out for a drink.

“When I go around holding my official certificate, people get excited, and they ask me to do the trick. I get a lot of kicks when I entertain them,” he said.

Kanno was in disbelief when he first broke the record, and he’s equally elated to have regained it.

His advice to anyone else seeking a world record is: “Everyone has their own unique traits. If you find that, nurture that, and figure out what you can do with it. Then you might find great ideas for breaking records.”
