An American university's 150th anniversary celebrations are on the right track with two records broken by staff and students.

A total of 5,527 students at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana (USA) got onboard with their college's attempt on 15 August for the Most people blowing train whistles simultaneously.

The attempt was part of the school’s freshman orientation week programming called “Boiler Gold Rush”, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the school’s mascot, the Boilermaker Special.

The Boilermaker Special is a road train which is known for being the only street legal mascot in the US, and blows its horn up and down the streets of the city each day.

The same day, a Purdue University professor was in his element as he used his scientific knowledge to become a Guinness World Records title holder.

Chemical engineering professor Vilas Pol showed students that he could persevere and achieve the Fastest time to arrange all elements of the periodic table in a total of 8 minutes 36 seconds.

"It's super challenging to place the 118 elements in their correct places when the clock is ticking," Pol said.

"As a professor, I wish that all my students know this modern periodic table by heart."

Both accomplishments have kicked off a year of celebrations to mark the university's 150th anniversary.

"We couldn’t have set these records and made lifelong memories for these students without the help of so many in the community," said Todd Braverman, program assistant for Purdue’s Orientation Programs.

"These volunteers not only donated their time during the official Guinness World Records attempt, but also completed required training prior to the official attempts.

"This is a great example to the incoming students of what a fantastic community they are moving into."
