An historic batting display led by Alex Hales saw England’s cricket team set a new record for Highest team score in a One-Day International (male) against Pakistan on Tuesday.

Hales struck a quick fire 171 runs while Jos Buttler made England's fastest ever 50 from just 22 balls as England breezed to 444-3 at Trent Bridge to clinch a series victory.

Hales’s knock on the opener’s Nottinghamshire home ground was the highest ever-individual ODI score by any England batsman and together with Joe Root (85) he put on 248 for the second wicket.

Forced to bat aggressively following the home team’s historic score, Pakistan’s batsmen struggled to build partnerships and were bowled out for 279.

The last ball of the innings saw wicket keeper Buttler, thrash Pakistan bowler  Hasan Ali’s deliveryover extra-cover for four and ensure a record was set, much to the delight of capacity crowd of more than 17,000.
The huge score by England betters the previous record of 443-9 registered by Sri Lanka against the Netherlands back in 2006.

“It was pretty much the perfect batting display,” Hales told Sky Sports following the record breaking innings.

“To get the record there with the last ball was unbelievable".

“It’s a special feeling, particularly for a team that’s still improving.”
