Japanese superstar Ichiro Suzuki has made another piece of baseball history after being recognised by Guinness World Records as professional baseball's base hit king.

The veteran Miami Marlins outfielder set a new record earlier this month for Most base hits in career - Professional baseball after surpassing Pete Rose's MLB record of 4,256 set between 1963 and 1986.

Ichiro achieved his 4,257th hits at the Miami Marlins game against San Diego Padres in San Diego, California, USA, on 15 June 2016.

Ichiro’s incredible tally combines his 2,979 MLB hits with his 1,278 hits in NPB.

Ichiro’s record-setting stats have been notched up over the course of a 24-year career which has seen him have stints at Orix Blue Wave, Seattle Mariners, and the New York Yankees.

The new achievement adds to Ichiro’s six other Guinness World Record titles earned during his glittering career, with the 42-year-old also holding the titles for Most hits by a rookie in a Major League season, Most hits in a Major League Baseball season, Most stolen bases consecutively in a Major League Baseball season, First inside-the-park home run in All-Star baseball history, and Most seasons with 200 hits in a Major League Baseball career.

Cincinnati Reds legend Pete Rose still maintains the record for Major League - most base hits in career, with 4,256 - a record that has stood since 1986.
